During the Procedure Itself

Before any tooth extraction begins, your care team will thoroughly numb the area around the tooth with local anesthesia. By the time the procedure starts, you shouldn’t feel any pain.

You may notice pressure or a sense of movement as the tooth is loosened and removed. That’s a normal part of the process, and it’s different from pain. A lot of patients are surprised by how much that distinction matters once they’re actually in the chair.

If anything feels sharp or uncomfortable during the procedure, say so. Adjustments can be made. The goal is that you feel nothing more than pressure throughout.

Molar Extractions Specifically

Molars sit further back, they have more complex root structures, and that can make the whole thing feel more daunting before you know what to expect.

Top and lower molar extractions follow the same principle as any other extraction, the area is numbed before anything begins, but because of that root complexity and position, they’re more involved than front teeth. If you’ve been nervous about whether you’ll feel more during a molar removal, the reassuring reality is that the numbing process is thorough regardless of which tooth is being removed.

A wisdom tooth extraction adds another layer, especially when the tooth is impacted. An impacted wisdom tooth hasn’t fully come through the gum, so the extraction typically requires a surgical approach rather than a simple one. Recovery may involve more soreness and a longer healing window than a straightforward extraction would.

Managing Discomfort as It Heals

Some tenderness around the extraction site in the first few days is a normal part of healing. Applying an ice pack to the outside of your face in the first 24 hours helps reduce swelling, and over-the-counter pain medication handles most of the discomfort for simpler extractions.

Healing generally goes smoothly when the blood clot that forms at the extraction site stays in place. Dry socket occurs when that clot is lost or displaced, leaving the underlying bone exposed. It’s not common, but it’s noticeably more painful than normal healing soreness and usually starts a few days after the extraction. We’ll give you clear aftercare guidance to help you avoid it.

Signs of infection are also worth calling about promptly. If you notice increasing pain after things had started to improve, unusual swelling, or fever, reach out to the practice rather than waiting. Those symptoms don’t typically resolve on their own, and our team would much rather hear from you early.
